The Willow Street UCC Preschool began in 1980 through the efforts of several very energetic church members who joined together to form the first “preschool board” in an outreach program of the Willow Street United Church of Christ. The preschool operates as a non-profit, self-supporting organization that provides a place for children of all faiths and ethnic origins to socialize and learn together.
IN THE CLASSROOM
Our goal is to prepare children for a positive kindergarten experience as they learn to cooperate and work together. Working with local school districts through the Transition to Kindergarten Initiative, our classrooms utilize the Pennsylvania Early Learning Standards. The preschool program empowers the children to grow socially and emotionally through individual and group activities. Child centered activities to develop thinking skills, creativity, and literacy development include stories, letter recognition, phonemic awareness, songs, rhythm activities, and finger plays. Math and science activities are designed for children to observe, compare, and experiment. Gym time and outdoor play encourage the children to develop a love for fitness.
Our preschool consists of a director, four teachers and five assistant teachers, all of whom are experienced in working with young children. All staff members are required to have current clearances and CPR certification. Sue Henry, the director, has been with the preschool since it was established in 1980.
Our school year begins in September and continues through mid-May. We operate on a 30 week schedule, with several vacations throughout the year.
